Skincare routines vary based on skin type and conditions. Similarly, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to creating a healthy hair care routine. Yours will depend on your hair and scalp type and any medical conditions affecting these areas.
Yet, achieving healthy hair that has you looking and feeling good is possible. And it all starts with the basics. Here are three tips from our board-certified dermatologists to help you get started!
Use Products Suitable for Your Hair Type
The first thing you need to do is define your hair type. There are four basic hair types: straight, wavy, curly and tightly curled. You might also consider whether you have thick or thin hair and if any of these common hair problems apply:
- Dandruff
- Dry, dull hair
- Split ends
- Hair loss
- Frizzy hair
- Oily/greasy hair
- Damaged hair (from too much heat or chemical treatments)
You might have to give a few different brands a try, but it’s worth it when you find products that achieve the results you desire.
Wash Oily Hair More and Drier Hair Less Often
How frequently you wash your hair depends on the amount of natural oil your scalp produces. If you tend to have oily or greasy hair near the scalp, you may need to wash your hair once a day.
If your scalp tends to be drier, washing less frequently will keep your hair in better shape. As you age, the scalp will often produce less oil—requiring less frequent washing.
Focus Shampoo at the Scalp and Conditioner on the Ends
Think of shampoo as soap and conditioner as a lotion for your hair. Both are vital in your hair care routine.
With shampoo, you want to focus primarily on cleansing the scalp. Then when conditioning, prioritize the middle and ends of your hair. The conditioner’s primary purpose is not to clean but to smooth, repair damage and protect these areas more prone to breakage.
