Xtrac Laser Treatment

What is Xtrac?

Xtrac is the only FDA-cleared, clinically proven laser therapy that gets skin clear of psoriasis and vitiligo, as well as some forms of eczema (atopic dermatitis). This targeted laser treats individual spots and areas to clear up these conditions. The XTRAC laser uses the same principles as phototherapy, but with more rapid results, using a highly concentrated form of ultraviolet-B (UVB) light.  The procedure lasts about 10-20 minutes, is painless, and is covered by insurance after a pre-authorization.

General Information

The treatment can feel warm at times, but most patients do not feel anything during their treatment.  A mild sunburn effect may be appreciated 12-24 hours after treatment which can include mild redness, itching or burning, but the symptoms are minimal and tolerable.  This treatment provides long-lasting relief. Now you can get relief without messy creams. Treatment is normally two to three times per week, but with a minimum of 48 hours between each treatment session.

What to expect when treating psoriasis?

Appointments should be scheduled twice a week with at least 48 hours between sessions.  Moderate skin tenderness (similar to a mild sunburn) lasting 24-72 hours indicates a good therapeutic response to the Xtrac laser treatment.  On average, patients notice improvement between 6-10 sessions and clearance between 10-20 sessions.  Average remission rates range from 3-6 months.  Blistering is a normal side effect of Xtrac therapy and often leads to faster clearance.   Hyperpigmentation (tan spots) may develop and will fade over time once therapy is complete.  After each treatment, you can treat your skin as you usually would and apply any medications, creams, or lotions.  Also, keep treated areas free from excessive sun exposure between treatment sessions.

What to expect when treating atopic dermatitis?

Appointments should be scheduled twice a week with at least 48 hour between sessions.  Moderate skin tenderness lasting 24-72 hours indicates a good therapeutic response to the Xtrac treatment.  Many patients notice a decrease in itching in 1-2 treatments.   On average, patients notice significant improvement in 2-4 treatments.   Xtrac therapy was found to be a safe and effective treatment for chronic cases of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis.   Average remission rates for Xtrac laser therapy range from 4-6 months.

What to expect when treating vitiligo?

Appointments should be scheduled 2-3 times a week with at least 48 hours between sessions.  The Xtrac laser works best for areas of vitiligo on the face, neck, and upper chest, but can be used to treat areas all over the body.  Re-pigmentation of treated areas may take 30 or more treatment sessions depending on individual response to UVB light.  Moderate skin tenderness lasing 24-72 hours indicates a good therapeutic response to the treatment.  Once re-pigmentation of treated areas is achieved, results may be permanent.  Blistering is a normal side effect of Xtrac therapy and may occur on treated areas.  Hyperpigmentation (tan spots) may develop and will fade over time once therapy is complete.  Also, keep treated areas free from excessive sun exposure between treatment sessions.
